I had a powerful conversation with a friend last night. One of the topics that came up in the conversation was “Changing perceptions of others.” I remember a while back I had a note on learning to not allow perceptions of people to get through your mentality or way of thinking. This is almost a deja vu point only with a vital twist.
When we come up in a new environment or setting, we are sometimes forced to use the calm, reserved approach to living so as to get ourselves conversant in our new surroundings. We may sometimes in the process not express our normal behaviour that others who know us well would be used to. In other words, we will be forced to hold back our natural openness.
Its ok to feel like this @ the beginning but it gets worrying if it carries on for a longer duration. At some point you will have to let go because, truth is, deep down inside you, you know you can’t keep this act up. However, if you are the type of person who feels reluctant to change, you might want to consider the implications of your decision.
As I may have said earlier, personal views and perceptions of others are like rolling a dice. You will win some, and you will lose some. This is a known fact but let’s alter the scenario a bit. How about you behave like someone you are really not. Not in a two-face manner but in a manner you restrict others from knowing who you really are.
That will definitely leave you with bitterness in the long run. Why you ask? Because you will allow people to firmly place a perception only replaceable if changes occur. You are going to let them see you for who you are not rather than you truly are. In some cases, these people will tend to withdraw making advances from you. Some may be forced to concede that you’re just not the type to be friends with etc..
Why should you care of course about whether one wants to know you or be friends with you especially in a educational institution, job industry or just everyday life? Its simple! You’ll never know when you might cross the paths of these people again and more importantly, you’ll never know when you may need their assistance of some sort. It could be with a job opportunity, medical assistance, etc..
We are all linked to each other in one way or the other in life, and our paths are bound to cross again by heavenly intervention. Time and situation is what separates as well as connects and transforms this fact into reality. Perceptions are not entirely to be viewed but a positive one can open the gate for you to a world full of opportunities. Remember that all it takes is a simple “hello” or “hi” to make an impact.
